Job Title: Program Assistant, Community Conservation Education & ActionStart Date: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications, skills, and experienceLocation: TBD; Targeting Mid-OctoberAbout the Role: The Perry Institute for Marine Science (PIMS) is seeking a professional with a strong work ethic to help build capacity for conservation education and outreach in The Bahamas within its local communities through our Community Conservation Education & Action (CCEA) Program. The CCEA program seeks to provide the tools, training, and experience to foster a greater conservation ethic across the country that results in positive actions for people wildlife and ecosystems and works to build the next generation of Bahamian conservation leaders. Following this vision, the program will (1) build capacity for conservation education and outreach in The Bahamas within local communities; (2) promote conservation education, awareness and action through the development of programs and behavior change strategies targeting students and key stakeholders and work with local partners to implement these programs; and (3) provide opportunities to engage conservation leaders in the Reverse The Decline (RTD) program.

The Program Assistant will work alongside the CCEA Director to provide operations coordination and program support. This position requires someone with an interest in a wide range of conservation activities including education, stakeholder engagement, community outreach, research, and science communication. The desired candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as great organizational and time management skills. This position will be perfect for someone looking to gain experience in multiple aspects of the marine and environmental conservation field.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the CCEA Director to create and implement programs, outreach activities, and communication efforts
• Coordinate logistics for CCEA programs, including organizing activities, recording participation, maintaining supplies, preparing outreach materials, etc.
• Assist CCEA Director with creating and maintaining relationships with partners, stakeholders, educators, participants, etc.
• Help develop and lead education programs, professional development workshops and trainings, and community meetings
• Assist with research and data analysis (Most research will primarily be interdisciplinary/social science investigations of fisheries and conservation; however, there may be opportunities to assist with in-water ecological field work related to PIMS’ fisheries programs or the Reef Rescue Network dependent on interest, training, and comfort level.)
• Develop infographics, flyers, training manuals, videos, and other communication products in collaboration with other PIMS staff
• Lead CCEA social media efforts by creating content to advertise programs, promote efforts, share news and success, and inspire behavior change; will also include managing the CCEA social media calendar and monitoring/participating in online social media conversations
• Represent CCEA and PIMS at community events

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Associates in Conservation, Marine or Environmental Science, Science Education, or a related field or 1-2 years of equivalent experience.
• At least 2 years of work experience in The Bahamas and/or small island developing countries
• Experience working with students and adults
• Dynamic and engaging public speaking skills
• Familiarity and experience with Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and other social media platforms
• Strong organizational skills and detailed oriented
• Some experience in developing a range of effective communication products tailored for stakeholder education and outreach programs
• Report writing and basic data analysis skills
• Comfortable working remotely
• Self-motivated and able to work with minimal direct supervision
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite (especially Word, Excel and Powerpoint)

• Passionate about marine and environmental issues
• BSc/BA in Conservation, Marine or Environmental Science, Science Education, or a related field or 2-3 years of equivalent experience
• Social media content creation
• Experience developing and implementing STEM curriculum
• Classroom management skills
• Creative and artistic skills (e.g. photography, filmmaking, graphic design, etc.)
• Familiarity or experience with Photoshop, InDesign, Canva or other graphic design software
• Certified SCUBA diver (or interest in getting certified)
