The Bahamas Coral Innovation Hub, nestled in the heart of South Eleuthera, is more than just a research facility. It’s a vibrant ecosystem of passionate individuals including coral scientists, conservation managers, local stakeholders, students, and educators from all corners of the globe. The hub is a product of an enriching collaboration between us (the Perry Institute for Marine Science), the Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI), and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), all dedicated to developing, implementing, and disseminating scalable coral restoration techniques.
The brain behind this comprehensive booklet is research scientist Natalia Hurtado. Since 2020, Natalia has meticulously compiled the coral spawning predictions for The Bahamas, informed by both historical and current observations. Together with her co-authors Lily Haines and Silia Woodside, this work has consistently led to accurate peak dates for mass spawning, providing important information to local scientists, grassroots nonprofits, dive organizations, and volunteers. Ultimately, these predictions are vital to synchronize efforts to enhance sexual coral reproduction using innovative larval propagation techniques. The booklet guides readers through the most likely times Caribbean coral species will spawn throughout the spring, summer, and fall of 2023. Moreover, it provides visual cues to help divers recognize the stunning events of coral spawning.
